5 Common Holiday Stains and How to Remove Them

The holidays bring joy, good food, and festive décor, but they also bring spills, drips, and messes for Baltimore homeowners. At Greenspring Rug Care, we know how quickly a celebration can turn into a rug emergency. Here are the most common holiday stains and the safest ways to handle them until a professional cleaning can restore your rug fully.

1. Red Wine

Red wine on a carpet makes you instantly cringe. But don't worry, there's hope if you act quickly. Blot immediately with a clean, dry cloth. Then apply a small amount of cold water and continue blotting. Never scrub, and avoid using household cleaners, which can set the stain.

2. Gravy & Oily Foods

Gravy is gross, but oil can be even worse. Here's what to do: place a dry cloth over the spot to absorb excess oil. Then sprinkle a bit of cornstarch or baking soda to draw out remaining grease. Let it sit briefly before gently brushing it away.

3. Candle Wax

Wives' tales about candle wax abound, but here's the real deal. Simply allow the wax to cool and harden completely. Gently lift or scrape off the surface layer. Do not apply heat, as melted wax can spread deeper into the fibers.

4. Mud & Dirt

Mud and dirt are more common but can add up over time. Let the mud dry untouched. Once dry, break it apart with your fingers and vacuum the loose pieces. Blot any remaining residue with a damp cloth - never rub.

5. Glitter

It wouldn't be a holiday party without glitter, right? To remove glitter, use a vacuum with a hose attachment to lift glitter from the surface. For stubborn pieces, wrap tape around two fingers (sticky side out) and lightly press it onto the rug.

Handle Holiday Stains the Safe Way

Your rug is an investment, and holiday stains can cause long-term damage when treated improperly. Avoid household spot cleaners and scrubbing, which often make stains worse. Professional cleaning removes deep-set debris, restores texture, and preserves fibers, especially after heavy holiday foot traffic.

At Greenspring Rug Care, our technicians safely treat all holiday stains using methods designed for delicate, hand-knotted, and antique rugs. If spills strike this season, schedule a professional cleaning for the best results. Contact us at (410) 667-RUGS today to request service in Baltimore and keep your rugs beautiful long after the holidays are over.
